Hail Stand Loss Calculator
Pre- and post-storm stands to loss percent.
What it does
Hail turns populations into arithmetic overnight. Original stand minus survivors over original gives loss percent; growth stage and calendar turn percent into replant or ride-on. Counting first keeps emotions out of it.
The tool above takes pre- and post-storm stands per acre and prints loss percent with remaining stand and plain guidance. Under 10 % usually rides; over 30 % calls the agent; the middle scouts stage tables.
Extension hail-loss guides from corn states teach this same count-compare method with row-length sampling behind the numbers. Growing points decide life: white and firm lives, brown mush dies, regardless of how ugly leaves look.
Document before disking. Photos, dates, and adjuster access protect claims; stage tables and seed availability govern replant math. Percent starts the conversation that stage and calendar finish.
How to use
- Count original stand per acre.
- Count live stand after the storm.
- Enter both numbers.
- Read loss percent and remaining stand.
- Follow the guidance band.
- Call insurance before tilling.
Formula
- original
- Pre-storm plants per acre.
- remaining
- Live plants per acre after.
Stands run plants per acre from row-length counts. Guidance bands are rules of thumb; growth stage, calendar, hybrid, and insurance terms move real replant calls. Confirm with stage tables and your agent.
Worked example
Example: 32,000 to 24,000
32,000 stand hailed to 24,000 per acre.
- Original stand 32,000 per acre.
- Remaining stand 24,000 per acre.
- Loss: (1 - 24000/32000) x 100 = 25 %.
- Guidance reads scout stage tables, consult agent.
- Photo, date, and notify insurance fast.
Reference table
| Loss | Read | Move |
|---|---|---|
| Under 10 % | Light | Keep, scout stage |
| 10 to 30 % | Moderate | Stage tables, agent |
| Over 30 % | Heavy | Evaluate replant |
| 100 % | Total | Document, replant window |
Limits
- Loss percent only. Stage tables decide replant.
- Counts need proper row-length sampling.
- Bands are guidance; contracts differ.
- Insurance terms override math.
Common mistakes
- Eyeballing instead of counting.
- Tilling before the adjuster visits.
- Judging by leaves, not growing points.
- Replanting past viable dates.
- Skipping photos and dates.
Try it yourself
Quick checks. Answers sit tucked under each question.
30,000 hailed to 28,500?
Loss is (1 - 28500/30000) x 100 = 5 %. Guidance reads usually keep, scout growth stage.
32,000 hailed to 18,000?
Loss is (1 - 18000/32000) x 100 = 43.8 %. Guidance reads evaluate replant with your agent.
Questions
How is stand loss figured?
Original plants per acre versus live ones after the storm, counted in row lengths. Loss percent is one minus the ratio, times 100. Growth stage decides what the percent means.
How do I count stands?
Length of row equal to 1/1000 acre at your spacing (17.4 ft for 30-inch rows), counted and multiplied by 1000. Repeat across the field, skipping edges.
When do I replant?
Under 10 % usually rides on, 10 to 30 % scouts stage tables with an agent, over 30 % weighs replant against calendar and seed. Stage beats percent: V2 and V8 read differently.
Hail or frost damage: how to tell?
Hail stones bruise stalks, strip leaves, and snap whips; frost and wind differ in pattern. Check growing points: white and firm lives, brown and mushy dies.
When do I call insurance?
Immediately for claims: photos, dates, adjuster access before tillage. Replant decisions wait on adjusters in insured fields.
Does this work for soybeans?
Same math, wider error bars: uneven emergence and gaps complicate counts. More samples across more acres steadies the number.
