What it does

A grade shows how much of the available points you earned. It is the most common way schools and courses report performance on a test or assignment.

The tool above converts earned points and total points into a percentage, a letter grade, and grade points. Enter your scores and read the result.

Letter cutoffs used here are A 90 and above, B 80 to 89, C 70 to 79, D 60 to 69, and F below 60. Schools vary, so check your syllabus for the exact scale.

Grade points translate a letter into the 4.0 scale used for GPA calculations. Plus and minus grading is not included in this simple model.

How to use

  1. Enter the points you earned.
  2. Enter the total points possible.
  3. Read the percentage first.
  4. Read the letter grade beside it.
  5. Read the grade points for GPA context.

Formula

Percentage = earned / total x 100. Letter grade by cutoff: A 90+, B 80-89, C 70-79, D 60-69, F below 60.
earned
Points earned on the test or assignment.
total
Total points possible.
percentage
Earned over total, expressed as a percent.
grade points
4.0 scale value for the letter grade.

The letter-to-points map is A 4.0, B 3.0, C 2.0, D 1.0, F 0.0. Cutoffs and plus/minus scales vary by school and teacher.

Worked example

Example: 85 of 100 points

Points earned 85, total points 100.

  1. Percentage: 85 / 100 x 100 = 85.0 percent.
  2. Letter: 85 falls in the B band (80 to 89).
  3. Grade points: B equals 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.
  4. An A needs 90 points, so 5.0 more points from here.
  5. Tool shows 85.0 percent, B, 3.0 grade points.

Limits

  • Letter cutoffs vary by school, teacher, and course. This model uses a common fixed scale.
  • Plus and minus grades are not included.
  • The tool does not weight assignments or average multiple grades.
  • Percentage alone does not show effort or improvement.

Common mistakes

  • Entering total points as zero, which is not allowed.
  • Assuming every class uses the same A-to-F cutoffs.
  • Confusing percentage with letter grade across schools.
  • Using this for weighted or curved grades without adjustment.
  • Entering earned points above total, which the tool rejects.
