Grab Bar Size Calculator
Grab bar minimums by wall with height.
What it does
Grab bars prevent the fall that tile invites. Side walls need forty two inches minimum while rear walls need thirty six, mounted thirty three to thirty six inches high. Lengths convert to 1065 and 910 millimeters.
The tool above reads the minimums by wall. Defaults give side wall 42 in (1065 mm) min at 33-36 in high. Rear metric gives 910 mm (36 in) min at 840-915 mm high. Placement offsets finish the picture beside the numbers.
Bars only work bolted to structure. Hollow anchors in drywall alone fail under body weight, so blocking or rated fasteners carry the load. Approach space and door swing decide real use as much as bar inches.
This page lists minimums only. It does not certify bathrooms, which need full route, fixture, and local adoption checks. Confirm with the authority before drilling.
How to use
- Pick imperial (in) or metric (mm).
- Pick side or rear wall.
- Read minimum bar length first.
- Read mounting height.
- Read placement offset.
- Confirm blocking and approach on site.
Formula
- side
- Wall beside the fixture.
- rear
- Wall behind the fixture.
- height
- Mounting band above finished floor.
Fixed accessibility minimums by wall. At any other wall the same minimums still guide planning. Hardware, blocking, and approach space sit outside this line.
