What it does

Raising a GPA takes more than good grades, it takes enough credits at those grades. A 3.0 over 60 credits needs straight 4.0 over 15 more to reach 3.2. The same target with 30 new credits needs far less per credit.

The tool above takes current GPA, current credits, new credits, and target and returns needed average, verdict, and target points. The defaults 3.0, 60, 15, and 3.2 match the worked example, so the page opens showing 4.

Needed is target times total credits minus current points, over new credits. Target points are target times total. Here 3.2 times 75 is 240 points, current holds 180, so 60 points over 15 credits means 4.0.

Use this to plan loads before registering. Splitting new credits across terms does not change the math, only pacing. Confirm scale caps with your school, since some cap at 4.0 and others allow 4.5.

This page shows the formula, one full hand checked example at 3.0 to 3.2, a reference table, and practice checks that run through the tool.

How to use

  1. Type current GPA.
  2. Type current credits earned.
  3. Type new credits planned.
  4. Type target GPA.
  5. Read GPA needed over new credits.
  6. Read Verdict for reach versus secured.

Formula

Need = (target x (cur+new) minus cur_gpa x cur) / new. Points = target x total.
cur
Current GPA times current credits = points banked.
new
Fresh credits to earn.
target
Goal cumulative GPA.

Caps at 4.5 here. Over 4.5 reports out of reach, below 0 reports secured.

Worked example

Example: 3.0 over 60 to 3.2 with 15 new

Sixty credits at 3.0, fifteen ahead, target 3.2. Find need.

  1. Total credits: 60 + 15 = 75.
  2. Target points: 3.2 x 75 = 240.
  3. Banked: 3.0 x 60 = 180.
  4. Gap: 240 minus 180 = 60 points.
  5. Need: 60 / 15 = 4.
  6. Verdict Reachable at straight A.
