What it does

Club distance starts at swing speed. Faster heads carry further with every club, and each club keeps its own share of that speed.

The tool above multiplies speed by a club factor. Ninety miles per hour with driver at 2.7 carries 243 yd for 262 yd total. The metric match is 145 kph toward 222 m.

Factors run down the bag. Driver near 2.7, woods near 2.3, hybrids near 2.0, mid irons near 1.5, and wedges near 1.1 yards per mile per hour.

Roll adds the last stretch. Dry fairways give about 8 % past carry, while soft greenside targets stop near the pitch mark.

Tempo notes guard speed chasers. Smooth swings outcarry hard slashes at most handicaps, with lessons worth more than miles per hour.

How to use

  1. Pick imperial (mph, yd) or metric (kph, m).
  2. Enter swing speed: 90 mph or 145 kph suits the default.
  3. Pick club.
  4. Read carry first.
  5. Read total with roll next.
  6. Read tempo note and swing smooth.

Formula

Carry = swing speed x club factor. Total = carry x 1.08.

Clubhead speed.
club
Driver through wedge carry factor.

Factors are yards per mph: driver 2.7 down to wedge 1.1. Metric converts carry at 0.9144 m per yard.

Worked example

Example: 90 mph driver

Imperial defaults: 90 mph driver swing. These are also the default values, so the page opens on this answer.

  1. Speed: 90 mph driver swing.
  2. Factor: driver carries 2.7 yd per mph.
  3. Carry: 90 x 2.7 = 243 yd.
  4. Total: 243 x 1.08 = 262 yd with roll.
  5. Tempo: 90 sits balanced.
  6. Tool shows 243 yd carry, 262 yd total, Balanced speed and control.

Limits

  • Speed model only. Strike rules distance.
  • Wind and turf shift real balls.
  • Factors fit average strikes, not mishits.
  • Fitting beats factors for gapping.

Common mistakes

  • Swinging harder instead of smoother.
  • Comparing carry to playing partners totals.
  • Ignoring wedge gapping at the bottom.
  • Chasing driver speed with no lessons.
  • Playing soft balls on windy days.

Try it yourself

Quick checks. Answers sit tucked under each question.

100 mph driver?

Carry is 100 x 2.7 = 270 yd. Total is 270 x 1.08 = 292 yd after rounding (291.6).

90 mph 7 iron?

Carry is 90 x 1.5 = 135 yd. Total is 135 x 1.08 = 146 yd after rounding (145.8).

Questions

How far a 90 mph driver?

Multiply speed by the club factor. Here 90 x 2.7 = 243 yd carry, or 262 yd total.

Club factors?

Driver 2.7, wood 2.3, hybrid 2.0, 7 iron 1.5, 9 iron 1.3, wedge 1.1 yards per mph.

Carry to total?

Multiply carry by 1.08. Here 243 x 1.08 = 262 yd.

What do tempo notes mean?

Under 85 smooth tempo, under 100 balanced, above tour pace with control first.

Strike quality matter?

Yes. Launch, spin, and strike shift real balls past speed math.

Will this fix my slice?

No. Lessons beat numbers for real gains.
