EIN Check Calculator
EIN format and prefix plausibility screen.
What it does
EINs identify businesses in nine digits, and vendors mistype them constantly: swapped pairs, short counts, and invented prefixes. A fast shape screen catches those before forms bounce.
The tool above takes any EIN as free text. It returns the plausibility verdict, the prefix note, and the formatted number.
The default 12-3456789 passes with issued prefix 12. The 95 case passes too, while 00 fails as unissued and short strings fail shape.
IRS application guidance fixes the XX-XXXXXXX shape with campus assigned prefixes, and SBA tax ID pages repeat the free filing path. Plausibility here means well formed, never IRS confirmed.
Real EINs come free from IRS online, fax, or mail in minutes for most applicants. Paid filer sites sell speed nobody needs, and confirmed records live only with the IRS.
How to use
- Type the EIN, dashes optional.
- Read plausible or prefix fail first.
- Read the prefix note beside it.
- Copy the formatted number last.
- Apply free at IRS for real ones.
- Recheck blocks on failure.
Formula
- prefix
- First two digits, campus range.
- XX-XXXXXXX
- Nine digits with dash after two.
IRS EIN application guidance defines the nine digit XX-XXXXXXX shape with campus assigned prefixes, and SBA tax ID guidance mirrors the same free application path. The embedded prefix set screens plausibility from published IRS ranges; mistyped digits and unissued prefixes fail here while real confirmation stays with IRS records.

Questions
EIN shape?
XX-XXXXXXX, 9 digits with an issued two digit prefix. Dashes optional on entry; the tool formats.
Proof of business?
No. This screens shape and prefix plausibility; only IRS records confirm issuance.
Prefixes meaning?
Campus codes behind IRS assignment. Unissued prefixes fail the screen.
Get a real EIN?
Apply free on IRS online, by fax, or by mail. Never pay a filer site.
SSN and ITIN?
SSNs randomize since 2011, ITINs start with 9, EINs carry campus prefixes. Each needs its own check.
Explain failures?
Yes, when shape passes but the prefix sits outside issued ranges.
