Drywall Screw Calculator
Drywall screws and boxes from sheet count.
What it does
Drywall screws are a count job: boards times pattern gives screws, and box size turns screws into boxes. This page keeps that count honest with round up, since half boxes do not hang boards.
The default is 20 sheets at 32 screws each with 300 per box. The total is 640 screws, which needs 3 boxes holding 900. The 260 spare covers drops, misses, and the extra ring near butt joints.
Pattern is the judgment input. Walls on 16 in studs often land near 32, ceilings and 24 in framing climb higher, and double layers double the count with longer screws on the face. Match the pattern to the inspection, not to habit.
Count differs from weight. Screws sell by pound and by count, and sizes change pieces per pound, so always enter the count from your box label rather than converting weight.
How to use
- Enter the sheet count.
- Enter screws per sheet for your pattern.
- Enter screws per box from the box label.
- Read total first, then boxes.
- Keep one spare box on large hangs.
Formula
- sheets
- Count of 4x8 boards hung.
- per sheet
- Screws driven per board by pattern.
- per box
- Screws in one store box.
Screws per sheet follow stud spacing and edges: 16 in walls often take 32, ceilings and 24 in framing take more. Box counts print on the box by screw size; 300 per 5 lb is common for 1-5/8 in coarse thread but read your box.
Worked example
Example: 20 sheets
20 sheets, 32 screws each, 300 per box.
- Total: 20 x 32 = 640 screws.
- Boxes: 640 / 300 = 2.13, up to 3 boxes.
- Check: 3 boxes hold 900 screws.
- Spare: 900 - 640 = 260 screws.
- Tool shows 640 screws and 3 boxes (300 ct).
Reference table
| Sheets | Screws | Boxes |
|---|---|---|
| 10 | 320 | 2 |

| 40 | 1,280 | 5 |
| 50 | 1,600 | 6 |
Limits
- Count only. No glue, tape, or bead.
- One pattern per pass. Mixed walls and ceilings need splitting.
- Box counts vary by screw size.
- Ignores waste beyond round up.
Common mistakes
- Rounding boxes down and running short.
- Using wall pattern on ceilings.
- Reading pounds as pieces across sizes.
- Forgetting double layers double screws.
- Skipping spare for misses.

Quick checks. Answers sit tucked under each question.
10 sheets at 32, 300 per box?
320 screws, 2 boxes (320 / 300 = 1.07, up to 2).
30 sheets at 32?
960 screws (30 x 32), 4 boxes at 300.
Questions
How many screws?
Sheets times screws each. Here 20 at 32 is 640.
How many boxes?
Total over box count, rounded up. Here 3 boxes.
How many per sheet?
Often 32 on walls (16 in studs) and 36 on ceilings. Check local code.
Should I add spare?
Yes for planning. Buy one extra box on big jobs for drops and misses.
Does it include nails?
No. Nails, glue, and corner bead sit outside screw math.
Double layer?
No. Fire rated or double layer boards need their own pattern.
