What it does

Crates size from the dog, not the room: length plus room to stretch and height plus room to stand. This page adds fixed allowances to both measures and maps length to standard crate bands from Small to XXL.

The default is a 30 in long, 24 in tall dog. The crate need is 36 by 28 in, which maps to Large (36 in). Metric defaults convert the same dog to 76 by 61 cm and give 91 by 71 cm in the same band.

Measure standing, not lying. Length stops at the tail base since tails curl past walls, and height includes ears for prick eared breeds. Tape twice while the dog stacks naturally rather than stretched.

Bands are buy sizes. Pick the band at or above need so the dog turns freely, and use dividers for puppies so the den stays small enough to keep clean while they grow.

How to use

  1. Pick imperial or metric first.
  2. Enter dog length (tail base).
  3. Enter standing height.
  4. Read crate length first, then height.
  5. Buy the band size at or above need.

Formula

Crate L = dog L + 6 in (metric +15 cm). Crate H = dog H + 4 in (metric +10 cm). Bands by crate L.
dog L
Dog nose to tail base.
dog H
Dog floor to head top standing.

Crates should let the dog stand, turn, and lie flat without crouching. Length runs nose to tail base (not tail tip) and height runs floor to ear top standing. Puppies outgrow math fast, so buy dividers and remeasure monthly.

Worked example

Example: medium to large dog

30 in long, 24 in tall dog (metric 76 by 61 cm).

  1. Crate length: 30 + 6 = 36 in.
  2. Crate height: 24 + 4 = 28 in.
  3. Band: 36 lands Large (36 in).
  4. Metric: 76 cm dog needs 91 cm crate.
  5. Tool shows 36 in long, 28 in tall, Large.

  • Puppies need rechecks.

Common mistakes

  • Measuring to tail tip instead of base.
  • Sizing by weight instead of length.
  • Buying below need to save space.
  • Skipping dividers for puppies.
  • Forgetting ear height on tall breeds.
