Cycling Speed Calculator
Average speed and per mile or km pace from ride distance and time.
What it does
Ride computers flatter with moving speed, but the clock tells the truth about the trip. Forty kilometers in 75 minutes averages 32 km/h door to door, a pace of 1:53 per km. The tool above divides any ride the same way in metric or imperial units.
The metric default is a brisk club run: 40 km, 75 min, 32 km/h with 24.9 mi beside it for cross border bragging. Imperial mode mirrors it at 24.85 mi in the same 75 min for 19.9 mph at 3:01 per mile. Both readings include every red light and hill.
Physics texts define the operation plainly: average speed is distance traveled divided by elapsed time, with pace as its inverse in minutes per unit. OpenStax works the same pattern for cars and marbles, such as 150 km in 3.2 h for 47 km/h, before warning that instantaneous readings swing around it.
Gaps between moving and average speed diagnose rides. A wide gap points at stops and traffic rather than fitness, while a narrow one on a hilly loop signals steady climbing legs. Compare like with like: flat solo efforts against flat solos, not against draft legal group rides.
How to use
- Pick metric (km) or imperial (miles).
- Type the full ride distance.
- Type total elapsed minutes, stops included.
- Read average speed first for the headline.
- Read pace to set targets for the next ride.
Formula
- distance
- Full route length in km or miles.
- time
- Elapsed minutes including stops.
- pace
- Minutes per km or per mile, shown m:ss.
Elapsed time, not moving time, so sensors that pause at lights report higher numbers. Wind, drafting, and elevation sit inside the single average.
Worked example
Example: 40 km in 75 min
Metric defaults: 40 km, 75 min.
- Hours: 75 / 60 = 1.25 h.
- Speed: 40 / 1.25 = 32 km/h.
- Pace: 75 / 40 = 1.875 min/km = 1:53 per km.
- Miles: 40 x 0.621371 = 24.9 mi.
- Tool shows 32 km/h, 1:53 /km, 24.9 mi.
Reference table
| Distance | Speed | Pace |
|---|---|---|
| 10 km | 20.0 km/h | 3:00 /km |
| 15 km | 30.0 km/h | 2:00 /km |
| 20 km | 40.0 km/h | 1:30 /km |
Limits
- One average only; surges and coasts vanish.
- Flat math; climbs cost more than descents repay.
- Wind and drafting unmeasured.
- GPS distance errors pass straight into speed.
Common mistakes
- Quoting moving speed as the trip average.
- Dropping stops from the clock.
- Mixing km pace with mile pace targets.
- Comparing solo rides with group drafts.
- Chasing speed on short rides, then fading long.

Quick checks. Answers sit tucked under each question.
20 km in 60 min?
20 km/h at 3:00 per km.
10 mi in 30 min?
20 mph at 3:00 per mile.

Questions
What is 40 km in 75 min?
32 km/h at 1:53 per km.
How do I convert pace to speed?
Divide 60 by pace minutes: 2:00 per km is 30 km/h.
Why is my sensor faster?
It pauses at stops; this page counts every minute.
Good average for a beginner?
Near 20 km/h solo on flat roads is a sound start.
Do hills ruin comparison?
Yes. Compare flat with flat and hilly with hilly.
MPH or km/h?
Both print: switch systems to read either.
