What it does

Cattle drink like clockwork and suffer fast without. A milking herd clears hundreds of gallons a day, so wells and troughs need real numbers.

The tool above multiplies head by rate by days. Twenty dairy cattle at 25 gal each need 500 gal a day, or 15,000 gal over a month in 5 trough fills. The metric match is 1,893 L a day.

Type sets the rate. Milking cows near 25 gal with watery feed needs, beef cattle near 15 gal, and heat waves push both higher.

Troughs pace the day. Five fills of a hundred gallon tank suit twenty milkers, with float valves that shut saving night overflows.

Clean water lifts intake. Shaded scrubbed tanks drink better than green warm ones, and intake drops warn before weight does.

How to use

  1. Pick imperial (gal) or metric (L).
  2. Enter cattle count.
  3. Pick dairy or beef.
  4. Enter days: 30 suits monthly planning.
  5. Read daily first, then total.
  6. Read trough fills and check valves.

Formula

Daily gal = cattle x rate (dairy 25, beef 15). Total = daily x days.
cattle
Head count.
type
Dairy or beef herd.
days
Days to cover.

Metric converts at 3.78541 L per gal with matching trough counts. Troughs assume 100 gal tanks.

Worked example

Example: 20 dairy cattle, 30 days

Imperial defaults: 20 dairy cattle for 30 days. These are also the default values, so the page opens on this answer.

  1. Herd: 20 dairy cattle.
  2. Rate: 25 gal per head per day.
  3. Daily: 20 x 25 = 500 gal.
  4. Month: 500 x 30 = 15,000 gal.
  5. Troughs: 500 / 100 = 5 fills of a 100 gal trough.
  6. Tool shows 500 gal per day, 15,000 gal, 5 trough fills per day.

Limits

  • Estimate only. Heat and feed shift intake.
  • Wells need flow tests past math.
  • Frozen tanks need heating plans.
  • Illness needs vet care.

Common mistakes

  • One trough for fifty head.
  • Algae tanks cattle avoid.
  • No float shutoff overnight.
  • Sizing to cool days only.
  • Skipping weekly scrubbing.

Try it yourself

Quick checks. Answers sit tucked under each question.

10 beef cattle, 30 days?

10 x 15 = 150 gal per day. Over 30 days that is 4,500 gal. Troughs are 150 / 100 = 1.5 fills.

5 dairy cattle, 7 days?

5 x 25 = 125 gal per day. Over 7 days that is 875 gal.

Questions

Water for a month?

Multiply head by rate by days. Here 20 x 25 x 30 = 15,000 gal.

How much per cow?

Near 25 gal for milking cows, 15 gal for beef cattle daily in this plan. Heat pushes higher.

Trough refills?

Divide daily by trough size. Here 500 / 100 = 5 fills.

Clean water tips?

Shade tanks, scrub algae, and float valves that actually shut. Stale water cuts intake.

What shifts intake?

Yes. Lactation, heat waves, and dry feed all raise drinking past the base.

Does this treat illness?

No. Sick cattle and thin calves need vet care.
