What it does

Cut trees drink hardest in week one: about a quart a day per inch of trunk, so a 4 inch trunk wants a gallon daily while the stand must never drop below the cut. Dry stands seal cuts and end uptake.

The tool above takes trunk diameter. It returns daily quarts with week-one totals and liter mirrors.

The default 4 inch trunk drinks 4 qt a day (3.8 L) for 28 qt in week one. The metric mirror of 10.2 cm reads the same.

Rules follow N.C. State and Ohio State extension pages. Both agree on 1 quart per inch with plain water used here.

How to use

  1. Pick inches or centimeters.
  2. Enter trunk diameter.
  3. Read daily quarts first.
  4. Read week-one total beside it.
  5. Size the stand to match.
  6. Refill daily, plain water.

Formula

Daily qt = trunk inches x 1. Week qt = daily x 7. Liters = qt x 0.946353.
diameter

1 qt

Centimeters convert to inches first (divide by 2.54), then the same rule runs. Small trees still need gallon stands for surge uptake. If the stand runs dry, recut thin before rewatering.

Worked example

Example: 4 inch trunk

Imperial defaults: 4 inch trunk.

  1. Trunk: 4 inches diameter.
  2. Daily: 1 qt per inch x 4 = 4 qt/day.
  3. Liters: 4 x 0.946353 = 3.8 L/day.
  4. Week one: 4 x 7 = 28 qt (7 gal).
  5. Stand rule: basin holds 1 qt per inch.
  6. Tool shows 4 qt/day, 28 qt/week (7 gal), 3.8 L/day.

Limits

  • Cut trees only; balled differ.
  • Firs outdrink some spruces.
  • Heat and vents raise need.
  • Estimates, check daily.

Common mistakes

  • Adding sugar or bleach.
  • Letting stands run dry.
  • Angle cutting trunks.
  • Sizing stands under a gallon.
  • Placing trees by heat vents.

Try it yourself

Quick checks. Answers sit tucked under each question.

3 inch trunk?

3 qt/day, 21 qt in week one.

6 inch trunk?

6 qt/day, 42 qt (10.5 gal) in week one.

2 inch trunk stand?

Still a gallon stand: surge uptake needs capacity past the daily math.

Questions

How much does a tree drink?

About 1 quart a day per inch of trunk diameter, most in the first 5 to 7 days.

How big should the stand run?

At least 1 gallon for most trees: 1 quart per inch of capacity so surges never strand it.

What goes in the water?

Plain tap water only. Sugar, aspirin, bleach, and preservatives never help.

Does week one drink most?

Yes: uptake peaks in week one, then eases. Refill daily regardless.

Should I recut the trunk?

Cut 0.25 to 0.5 in straight across if over about 12 hours passed. Never angle cut.

How do I check freshness?

Bend needles (fresh bend, dry snap), tap for excess drop, and keep vents and heat away.
