What it does

Grain trades by the bushel but weighs by the pound, with each crop assigned its standard: 56 for corn, 60 for wheat and soy, 48 for barley, 32 for oats. Scale tickets divide into bushels on those numbers.

The tool above takes scale weight with the grain. It returns bushels with test weight and tons.

The default 4,480 lb of corn makes 80 bushels at 2.24 tons. The metric mirror of 2,032 kg reads the same with 2.03 tonnes.

Weights follow Ohio State tables with USDA feed grain docs behind them. Both agree on 56/60/48/32 used here.

How to use

  1. Pick pounds or kilos.
  2. Enter the scale weight.
  3. Pick the grain.
  4. Read bushels first.
  5. Read test weight beside it.
  6. Read tons or tonnes.

Formula

Bushels = pounds / test weight. Corn 56, wheat/soy 60, barley 48, oats 32, rice 45.
pounds
Scale weight in pounds.
test weight
Standard lb per bushel.
tons
Short tons per 2,000 lb.

Kilos convert to pounds first (x 2.20462), then identical math runs. Bushels round to 1 decimal; tons and tonnes to 2. Standard weights trade grain, graded scales judge it.

Worked example

Example: 4,480 lb of corn

Imperial defaults: 4,480 lb corn.

  1. Load: 4,480 lb shelled corn.
  2. Test weight: 56 lb/bu.
  3. Bushels: 4,480 / 56 = 80.
  4. Tons: 4,480 / 2,000 = 2.24.
  5. Metric check: 2,032 kg converts equal.
  6. Tool shows 80 bushels, 56 lb/bu, 2.24 tons.

Limits

  • Standard weights, not grades.
  • Discounts adjust pounds first.
  • Oats dual value noted.
  • Moisture standards sit outside.

Common mistakes

  • Using grade weights to trade.
  • Mixing import oat values.
  • Skipping dockage math.
  • Weighing wet grain as dry.
  • Rounding bushels too early.

Try it yourself

Quick checks. Answers sit tucked under each question.

10,000 lb wheat?

10,000 / 60 = 166.7 bushels.

320 lb oats?

320 / 32 = 10 bushels.

Metric defaults?

2,032 kg converts to the same 80 bushels.

Questions

How are bushels computed?

Pounds divided by test weight: corn 56, wheat and soy 60, barley 48, oats 32.

Is this the grade test weight?

No: standard weights trade while graded test weight (No.1 56, No.2 54) grades quality.

Do oats carry two values?

Yes: oats run 32 domestic against 38 import per USDA notes.

Do discounts apply here?

No: dockage, moisture, and foreign material adjust pounds first.

Does metric work?

Same math in kg with tonnes beside tons.

What about rice and rye?

Rough rice 45, rye and sorghum 56 per the tables.
