What it does

Sitting jobs are usually quoted by the hour, then settled with cash, an app payment, and sometimes a tip for late nights or extra kids. Writing the three parts down before the job avoids end of night haggling at the door.

The tool above takes hours, hourly rate, and tip percent. It returns base pay, tip dollars, and the job total, so both sides can agree on one number before bedtime routines start.

This math fits one flat rate for the whole job. It does not fit split rates such as a higher price after midnight, per child add ons, or agency fees that bill separately from sitter pay.

Labor and tax guides draw the same line: the job total here is gross pay for the night. Household employer rules from the IRS may still add Social Security, Medicare, or withholding duties when yearly totals cross set thresholds.

Agree the rate, the rounding for partial hours, and the tip before the job. A 15 minute overrun at $18 an hour is $4.50, which is easier to pay when it was settled in advance.

How to use

  1. Enter hours worked, using halves for half hours.
  2. Enter the agreed hourly rate in dollars.
  3. Enter the tip percent, or zero for no tip.
  4. Read base pay first to confirm hours times rate.
  5. Read tip and job total for the final handoff.
  6. Rerun with actual end time if the night runs long.

Formula

Base = hours x rate. Tip = base x tip/100. Total = base + tip.
hours
Time worked, with fractions for partial hours.
rate
Agreed dollars per hour before tip.
tip
Tip percent applied to base pay.

Partial hours use decimals: 30 minutes is 0.5, 15 minutes is 0.25. A zero tip returns base as the total, and a zero rate returns zeros throughout.

Worked example

Example: 4 hours at $18 with 10% tip

Hours 4, rate 18, tip 10%, one flat rate.

  1. Base: 4 x 18 = $72.00.
  2. Tip: 72 x 0.10 = $7.20.
  3. Total: 72 + 7.20 = $79.20.
  4. Tool shows base $72.00, tip $7.20, total $79.20.
  5. Per hour with tip: 79.20 / 4 = $19.80 effective.

Reference table

4 hours at three rates with 10% tip
RateBaseTipTotal
$15$60.00$6.00$66.00
$18$72.00$7.20$79.20
$22$88.00$8.80$96.80

Limits

  • One flat rate only. After midnight premiums need separate lines.
  • Ignores per child add ons, mileage, and agency fees.
  • Ignores household employment taxes and withholding.
  • Cash rounding to whole dollars still needs a house rule.

Common mistakes

  • Figuring tip on the total instead of on base pay.
  • Rounding hours down silently instead of agreeing halves.
  • Mixing two sitters on one line with different rates.
  • Forgetting the late overrun between quoted and actual end time.
  • Assuming the job total already holds payroll taxes.

Try it yourself

Quick checks. Answers sit tucked under each question.

3 hours at $15 with no tip?

Base $45.00, tip $0.00, total $45.00.

5 hours at $20 with 15% tip?

Base $100.00, tip $15.00, total $115.00.

2.5 hours at $16 with 10% tip?

Base $40.00, tip $4.00, total $44.00.

Questions

How is babysitter pay figured?

Hours times hourly rate gives base pay. Add tip percent on base for the job total.

Is tip figured before or after fees?

On base pay. Figure agency fees and mileage outside the tip line.

How do I pay for half hours?

Use decimals. 3.5 hours at $18 is $63.00 before tip.

What about two rates in one night?

Run each span separately, then add the totals. One line cannot hold two rates.

Does the sitter owe tax on this?

Often yes as income. Household employer duties depend on yearly totals, so see IRS Topic 756.

What is a fair tip for sitters?

Many families add 0 to 20% for late nights or extra work. Agree it before the job, not after.
