What it does

Auroras dance where solar wind strikes magnetic poles, and Kp grades the storm from 0 calm to 9 extreme. Latitude math turns the index into a drive plan.

The tool above takes Kp. It returns the visible latitude with best hours and a storm note.

The default Kp 5 shows above 58 N around magnetic midnight. The quiet case at Kp 2 needs 64 N, while Kp 9 reaches 50.

Forecast centers publish Kp with viewing guidance per level, and geophysical institutes repeat the latitude timing rules. Oval position breathes with solar wind, so rules stay rough.

Dark skies decide every chase: clouds, moonlight, and city glow veto forecasts nightly. Face north after midnight with patience and warm layers.

How to use

  1. Type the forecast Kp.
  2. Read the latitude first.
  3. Read best hours beside it.
  4. Read the storm note last.
  5. Drive dark and north.
  6. Check clouds, not just Kp.

Formula

Visible near above 68 minus 2xKp degrees latitude. Best magnetic midnight ±3 h.
Kp
Planetary K index 0 to 9.

Space weather forecast centers publish Kp with aurora viewing guidance keyed to the same index. Geophysical institute aurora resources mirror the latitude rule with magnetic midnight timing. Rough rule only; oval shifts with solar wind pressure.

Worked example

Example: Kp 5 storm

Default: Kp 5.

  1. Storm: Kp 5 from the forecast.
  2. Latitude: 68 minus 2 x 5 = 58 N and above.
  3. Hours: magnetic midnight plus or minus 3.
  4. Note: storm levels reach mid latitudes.
  5. Check: clouds and moonlight still rule.
  6. Tool shows Above 58° N, Magnetic midnight ±3 h, Storm levels: mid latitudes possible.

Limits

  • Rough rule, not oval models.
  • Clouds unread here.
  • City glow unread.
  • Southern oval mirrored.

Common mistakes

  • Chasing daylight auroras.
  • Trusting Kp alone.
  • Facing city glow north.
  • Skipping midnight hours.
  • Ignoring moon phase.

Try it yourself

Quick checks. Answers sit tucked under each question.

Kp 2?

Above 64° N, midnight hours, high latitudes only.

Kp 9?

Above 50° N with storm levels possible.

Kp 12?

Kp stops at 9: enter 0 to 9.

Questions

Latitude rule?

68 minus twice Kp, roughly. Kp 5 shows near 58 N, Kp 9 near 50.

Kp meaning?

Planetary K averaged globally, 0 calm to 9 extreme storm.

Best hours?

Magnetic midnight plus or minus 3 hours, dark skies away from cities.

Guaranteed at latitude?

Yes, clouds, moon, and light pollution veto every forecast.

Same night as flares?

No, aurora follows solar wind, roughly 1 to 3 days after big flares.

Southern lights?

Yes, southern oval mirrors near 58 S and beyond at high Kp.
