What it does

A 529 plan grows tax free when the money pays for qualified education costs. Most families add money year by year, but the tax code also allows a large one-time deposit: the five-year gift tax averaging election, often called superfunding. It lets a donor treat one contribution as if it were spread over five years for gift tax purposes.

The math starts with the annual gift tax exclusion. For 2026 that is $19,000 per donor per recipient. Multiply by five and one donor can put $95,000 into a 529 for one beneficiary without using any lifetime gift and estate tax exemption. A married couple who each make the election can move $190,000 per child in one go.

The election does not remove the reporting duty. The donor files Form 709 for the year of the gift and checks the box that spreads the contribution over five years. Each of the five slices is then measured against the annual exclusion for its year, and no gift tax is due as long as the slices stay within the exclusion.

The trade-off is inflexibility. The donor has used five years of annual exclusion for that beneficiary, so further gifts to the same person in those years may become taxable or use lifetime exemption. If the donor dies during the five-year period, the portion not yet allocated is pulled back into the estate for estate tax purposes.

This calculator checks capacity, shows how much of the contribution sits above it, and reports the yearly slice. It also flags whether Form 709 is needed. It does not decide whether a 529 is the right savings vehicle, and it does not apply state tax deductions, which vary by state.

How to use

  1. Choose whether one donor or two donors are making the gift.
  2. Enter how many beneficiaries will receive money from the contribution.
  3. Enter the total amount you plan to contribute in one year.
  4. Read the total five-year capacity and the capacity per beneficiary.
  5. Check the annual slice that will be treated as a gift in each of the five years.
  6. Confirm the Form 709 status before filing the return for the gift year.

Formula

Capacity = $19,000 x 5 x donors x beneficiaries; annual slice per beneficiary = min(amount per beneficiary, $95,000 x donors) / 5.
$19,000
2026 annual gift tax exclusion per donor per recipient.
5
Years covered by the five-year averaging election.
donors
One or two donors making the gift; spouses can each elect separately.
beneficiaries
Number of 529 beneficiaries receiving part of the contribution.
amount
Total contribution made in the gift year, in dollars.

The election applies per donor and per beneficiary. The annual slice is based on the portion that fits inside the five-year capacity; any amount above capacity is a completed gift in the year of the contribution and uses lifetime exemption. Form 709 is required when the gift to any one beneficiary exceeds $19,000 per donor, which is the usual case for a superfunding election. A gift above the annual exclusion does not automatically mean gift tax is owed, because the lifetime exemption absorbs it. The total is assumed to be split evenly across the beneficiaries entered.

Worked example

Example: two donors, two beneficiaries, $380,000

Two spouses contribute $380,000 in 2026, split evenly between two beneficiaries.

  1. The 2026 annual exclusion is $19,000 per donor per beneficiary.
  2. Five years of exclusion gives $19,000 x 5 = $95,000 per donor for one beneficiary.
  3. Two donors raise that to $190,000.00 per beneficiary.
  4. Two beneficiaries raise total capacity to $190,000.00 x 2 = $380,000.00.
  5. The contribution of $380,000 divided by two is $190,000.00 per beneficiary, exactly at capacity.
  6. The annual slice is $190,000 / 5 = $38,000.00 per beneficiary, or $19,000 per donor per year.
  7. Because $190,000 per beneficiary is above the $19,000 annual exclusion, each donor files Form 709 and makes the five-year election.

12$95,000$190,000

23$190,000$570,000

Limits

  • Uses the 2026 federal annual exclusion; state deductions and recapture rules are not included.
  • Assumes the contribution is a completed gift with no material restriction on the beneficiary's use.
  • Does not model generation-skipping transfer tax when the beneficiary is a grandchild or other skip person.
  • Ignores the effect of other gifts made to the same beneficiary in the same five years.

Common mistakes

  • Multiplying the exclusion by five but forgetting to multiply by the number of donors.
  • Splitting a contribution across too many beneficiaries without checking capacity per person.
  • Skipping Form 709 because no gift tax is expected.
  • Making additional large gifts to the same beneficiary during the five-year window.
  • Assuming the election protects the full amount when the donor dies within five years.

One donor, one beneficiary, $120,000?

Capacity is $95,000.00, the excess is $25,000.00, the annual slice is $19,000.00, and Form 709 is required.

Questions

What is superfunding a 529?

It is a contribution large enough to use five years of the annual gift tax exclusion at once, under the election in section 529(c)(2)(B) of the tax code.

How much can a married couple front-load in 2026?

Up to $190,000 per beneficiary when both spouses elect the five-year treatment, or $95,000 for a single donor.

Is gift tax owed on a superfunded 529?

Usually not. The election keeps the gift within the annual exclusion across five years, though the amount above that uses lifetime exemption.

Which form reports the election?

Form 709, United States Gift (and Generation-Skipping Transfer) Tax Return, filed for the year of the contribution.

What if the donor dies during the five years?

The portion of the gift allocated to the years after death is included in the donor's gross estate.

Can the beneficiary be changed later?

The account owner can usually change the beneficiary to another family member without triggering gift tax, but the original election still applies to the first beneficiary.
